TSMC launches production of 3nm chips, but so far only in test mode

TSMC, one of the leading semiconductor manufacturers on the market, is constantly improving its process technology. Right now, for example, the company is on the verge of introducing 3-nanometer standards.

According to sources cited by the GizChina portal, TSMC has already launched the production of chips using a 3-nanometer technological process, although it is still in test mode. Mass production of chips according to 3-nanometer standards will start only a year later, in the fourth quarter of next year. Theoretically, when switching to a 3-nanometer process technology, the density of transistors will increase by 70% compared to 5-nanometer standards. This will make the processors more compact, powerful and energy efficient. The transition to new technologies will provide a 15% increase in productivity and a 30% reduction in energy consumption.

By the way, during a recent press conference on the publication of the quarterly report, the CEO of TSMC said that the trial production of 3-nanometer chips will start before the end of 2021. And the new technical process will be introduced into mass production in the second half of 2022. This is quite consistent with the latest inside information. Now it is hoped that the company will reveal the details of the transition to the new regulations at the next conference for analysts and investors in January.
