Senator Tasso Jereissati (PSDB-CE) declared, this Thursday (7), in an interview with CNN which was in favor of the Proposal for Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) of Benefits for increasing the value of Auxílio Brasil and for the end of the benefit queue.
“We had no way of voting against other expenditures at that time. We defend two measures: the increase in Auxílio Brasil, from R$400 to R$600, and the end of the line, which evidently you are seeing people on the street who are not receiving this aid”, explained Tasso.
“And the other measures, I agree, are totally inappropriate,” he continued. “We had no way out. The way out was to do nothing. In my conscience I do not agree, I could not contribute to doing nothing.”
The Benefits PEC was approved today by a special committee in the Chamber of Deputies. The proposal by deputy Danilo Forte (União-CE) was recognized with 36 votes in favor and 1 against. All the highlights presented by the parliamentarians were rejected and the text of the Federal Senate was maintained.
Now, the PEC goes to the plenary of the House, and can be voted on next Tuesday (12).
The measure provides for the recognition of the state of emergency in 2022 and a package of BRL 41.25 billion in aid outside the spending ceiling three months before the elections.
The text creates an aid of BRL 1,000 for truck drivers and an aid still without a defined amount for taxi drivers and the gas voucher for around BRL 120 every two months, among other points. These measures would be valid until December 31 of this year.
Last Tuesday (5th), the Federal Audit Court (TCU) opened a process to analyze a request made by the Public Ministry to investigate the Benefits PEC.
The request of the Public Ministry was made, on Monday (4), with the court to “know, evaluate and prevent the federal government, with regard to recent measures aimed at easing the spending ceiling, from compromising the fiscal balance of public accounts”.
The description of the process in the TCU system also points out that the purpose of the investigation is that, “given the imminence of approval of the PEC, the government will carry out studies and disclose how many people/families will receive the benefits created/extended”.
“With categorization [dos beneficiados] by municipality, gender, age group and level of education, so that the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) can accurately examine whether there was abuse of political/economic power in the upcoming October elections,” the lawsuit adds.
