At least four migrants have been killed and ten others are missing after a boat sank off the coast of Tunisia today, an official in Tunis said.
The Tunisian Coast Guard rescued 44 migrants from the boat bound for Italy and capsized under unclear circumstances off Sfax.
According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, a total of more than 123,000 refugees and migrants arrived off the coast of Italy in 2021, and by 2020 – the median of the pandemic – their number had dropped to 95,000.
Nearly 2,000 refugees and migrants were declared missing or drowned in the Mediterranean last year, up from 1,401 in 2020, according to the International Organization for Migration.
