Tunisian security forces have detained Noureddine Baiti, a senior member of the moderate Islamist Ennahda party, one of the country’s largest political forces, the party said in a statement.
Bairi is Ennahda’s first senior party official to be arrested since July, when Tunisian President Kais Syed dissolved parliament and effectively took over the country.
Ennahda, as well as some secular forces, have denounced the Tunisian president’s specific moves as a de facto coup.
The Ennahda Movement (also known as the Renaissance Party), which belongs to the Islamist-conservative right, is a political “arm” of the Muslim Brotherhood in Tunisia, and maintains close ties with its similar ideological party, the Justice and Development Party (AKP). Erdogan, who has been politically dominant in Turkey since 2002.
