Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of its capital Tunisia Tunis and other cities, demanding the resignation of the government, after the increase of Covid-19 cases, which has worsened the economic problems in the country.
In Tunis, police used pepper spray against protesters, who hurled stones and shouted slogans calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Hisham Masisi and the dissolution of parliament.
Eyewitnesses reported that mobilizations involving hundreds of people took place in the cities of Kafsa, Sidi Bouzid, Monastir and Nabel. Crowds of protesters in Sousse attempted to storm the local offices of Ennahda’s largest party. In Tozer, protesters set fire to Ennahda headquarters.
“Our patience is running out; there are no solutions for the unemployed,” said Nuredin Selmi, 28, an unemployed protester. “They can not control the epidemic… They can not give us vaccines.”
Last week, Masisi ousted his health minister after scenes of chaos at vaccination centers during Eid, where crowds formed queues for vaccines that were not enough for everyone.
