A Tunisian man has been hospitalized today with injuries sustained by police, activists say, in the first death since protests erupted following the ouster of President’s Saeed Syed.
Local radio station Mosaique FM reported that prosecutors had launched an investigation into the protester’s death, which was triggered by police using water cannons and clubs against protesters on Friday.
There was no immediate comment from the authorities.
Sayed has been facing growing resentment since ousting the former prime minister, suspending parliament and taking over extended powers last July, a move his opponents have called a coup.
“Ridha Bouziane, who took part in the January 14 demonstration, died in a hospital in the capital after being seriously injured as a result of excessive police violence during the demonstration,” said the Citizens Against the Coup coalition.
Samir Dilou and Samir Ben Amor, lawyers for the detained protesters, also said Bouziane had died as a result of police violence, although no further details were given.
The Tunisian president has stated that he will guarantee all freedoms during a transitional period for the adoption of a new Constitution later this year.
Friday’s demonstrations took place in defiance of the Covid-19 ban.
