Tunisia Minister Arrested in Italy Waste Case

The dismissed minister of local affairs and environment Mustafa Laroui was arrested yesterday in the Italy waste case.

The Italy Waste Case

In November 2020, a suspicious shipment of containers full of waste was bought under the limelight in a tv program. Scores of containers full of toxic house hold and hospital waste had. been shipped to Tunisia. The purpose behind the shipment was said to be ‘recycling’ of waste.

The 280 containers of waste had been mislabeled and were against the internationally set standards of importing waste. The Arabic magazine Mugtama then reported that a local company had signed an agreement worth $6.5 billion with Italy to import 120,000 tons of waste from Italy every year.

Upon the facts being bought into limelight, the judicial authorities in Tunisia started an investigation into the process.

Minister of Environment Dismissed

Following the investigations, Mustafa Laroui was dismissed on Sunday. Kamal Al Doukh, the minister of housing and equipment has been appointed as the acting minister of local affairs and environment.

The former minister Laroui has now been arrested. Other Tunisian officials from the waste and management agency and Tunisian customs were also arrested. Investigations are still under way and Tunisia plans to return the containers of waste to Italy.
