Tunisia: Security forces disperse large demonstration against President Sagent in Tunis

With tear gas, water cannons and several arrests, security forces today violently dispersed protests in Tunis against the country’s president, despite a ban on health rallies.

The crowd also celebrated the 11th anniversary of the fall of the regime of Zine el Abidine Ben Ali, an event that led to the Arab Spring.

“Down with the coup, the people want the coup to end,” shouted protesters who had flooded Mohamed Eid Avenue in central Tunis.

Political opponents of President Kais Sayed describe the “suspension” of the fact that on July 25 he suspended the parliament and dismissed the government, taking over the government by decree.

The interior ministry, which had deployed strong police forces in the capital, said 1,200 people had taken part in the protests.

The crowd managed to break the police cordon several times and the security forces responded with tear gas and water under pressure. As they were prevented from reaching the main road, Habib Bourguiba Avenue, they disbanded into several separate groups.

According to AFP reporters, dozens of arrests were made and many people were beaten and dragged by police to the ground. Among them was a 15-year-old. A journalist said she heard warning shots.

Other witnesses said they saw at least two foreign journalists arrested.

“This is the most violent intervention by the security forces we have seen, both in terms of the means used and the arrests,” said Fati Jarai, chairman of an independent anti-torture authority that has been monitoring protests in the country for a year. Tunisia.

About 50 people managed to approach the building of the Ministry of Interior, on a lane of Habib Bourguiba Avenue. “You work for (Abdel Fattah) al-Sisi and the Emirates,” a woman shouted at a police officer. Sayed’s political opponents accuse the Egyptian president and the United Arab Emirates of supporting the coup.
