Twenty-seven migrant bodies were recovered yesterday and another 83 migrants were rescued after two boats sank off the coast of Tunisia, a Civil Protection official told AFP today. “Among the 27 bodies recovered off (the eastern) Kerkena (archipelago) are women and children,” Zied Sthiri, regional director of Civil Protection in the city of Sfax, told AFP. About 110 migrants from various sub-Saharan African countries were on board two makeshift boats, “which left the coast near Sfax on the night of December 31 to January 1,” a National Guard official said. “Operations are underway to locate other missing migrants,” added the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
