She had been left home from work after her second maternity leave. Now, however, Katia Pellegrino, 39, will be able to return as an employee to Emmecitecnica di Leinì, in the province of Turin. The company had justified the measure by bringing it up rising costs of raw materials and energywhich would have required a “cut” of resources.
Katia Pellegrino, who had worked at Emmecitecnica since she was 21, had therefore decided to not withdraw the letter of dismissal and to make public the decision of his employers, triggering a series of protests, supported by Uilm trade unionists and by Elly Schlein, candidate for the secretariat of the Democratic Party. The company, however, had also reiterated its intentions during the meeting with the unions, without even evaluating the proposals of the two Uilm officials who were conducting the negotiations for the reinstatement.
In the last few hours, however, the about-face: Emmecitecnica has declared itself “available to continue serious negotiations to seek possible alternatives” and, after a 3 hour table, the firm (who also proposed a reduction in working hours to part time) accepted the reintroduction of the employee.
Katia Pellegrino, however, will not return to the role she held before the second maternity leave – she was in charge of the commercial sector and took care of relations with customers and suppliers -: she will resume working as a secretary, the job that had been assigned to her after her return from her first maternity leave. According to her, the dismissal was only the latest act of a progressive demotion.
“At one point I was pessimistic,” he told The print. «But I hoped until the last moment that things could change. At least now I know that I will be able to continue to have a job and a salary ». And again: ««I have seen too many people accept abuse without having the strength or courage to react. Now I hope that will no longer be the case. On the contrary, I would like my story to serve as an example. That is, if a person is fired without a just reason, he must be able to defend himself. And you must also be able to count on a point of reference ».
“We are Glad common sense prevailed of the parties and that the company has withdrawn the dismissal», comments Uilm. «The worker, our union delegate, returns to the company and keeps her salary. It is important that for the future the company undertakes not to proceed with any individual or collective dismissal without first dealing with the union».
