Selahattin Demirtas, one of Turkey’s best-known politicians and former co-chair of the People’s Democratic Party (HDP), has been in prison for five years on “terrorism” charges, which he denies.
Nacho Sanchez Amor, Member of the European Parliament and Member of the European Delegation to the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee, commented that the verdict seemed completely “political”.
“2.5 years in prison for a simple mistake inadvertently getting a medical certificate – it is terrible, beyond all reason. It just looks like such a political decision. And it gives a measure of how alarming the state of Turkish justice is.”
