Turkey: 24 suspects arrested for involvement in coup attempt in 2016

Turkish police today arrested at least 24 people for their alleged links to the network accused of orchestrating the 2016 coup attempt, according to public broadcaster TRT.

The operation in Sanliurfa, in the southeastern part of the country, arrested 16 people – including doctors, teachers and police – who are said to be linked to the Gulen movement, which the Turkish government accuses of being behind the failed coup attempt. of 15 July 2016.

In a second operation in Istanbul, police arrested eight other people allegedly responsible for the movement’s “infiltration” of police schools.

Ankara blames self-exiled Imam Fethullah Gulen as the “mastermind” of a coup attempt in which more than 250 people were killed.

Turkey has demanded Gulen’s extradition, but Washington is reluctant to extradite the self-proclaimed imam, arguing that Ankara has not provided sufficient evidence against him.

The Turkish government has launched a huge operation to arrest suspected Gulenists in the wake of the failed coup.
