Turkey: 31 killed by floods – 8-storey building collapses, cars swept away

The unprecedented extent floods for decades in Turkey have claimed the lives of at least 31 people in the northern part of the country, where President Recep Tayyip Erdogan went today (13/8) to promise to provide the necessary support to those affected.

According to a provisional report by the government agency responsible for dealing with natural disasters (Afad), 29 people died in the province of Kastamoni, located on the Black Sea coast and two in neighboring Sinop. There are missing persons, however their exact number has not been clarified.

The Turkish president went today to one of the most affected areas by the floods, in Bozkurt, in the province of Kastamonu, where, among other things, an eight-storey building collapsed.

“Your pain is the pain of us all. “The state will stand by you by all means,” Erdogan said before attending the victims’ funerals.

“I have never seen anything like this”

In a state of shock, some survivors began to express their anger at the local authorities, accusing them of not reacting quickly enough to guarantee the safety of the population.

“We were only told to put our cars in a safe place, because there was a risk of the river overflowing. “We were not told to save our lives or those of our children,” said Arzu Yucel, whose twin girls and in-laws went missing after the building where they lived collapsed.

“If we had been warned, we would have left in less than five minutes (.). “They did not ask us to leave,” she added, weeping, according to the DHA news agency.

Adem Senol, 75, saw the rushing water “swallow” his house in Bartin province in a few minutes.

“I have never seen anything like this in my life,” he told the Anadolu news agency. “The water exceeded the height of our windows, broke our door,” he added.

The meteorological services predict that the rains will continue in the affected areas for the rest of the week.
