A Turkish court on Monday ruled that philanthropist Osman Kavala should remain in prison for as long as his trial lasts, extending his detention for more than four years without having been convicted of a crime.
This practice has created great tension between Ankara and its Western allies.
The court decided to keep Kavalas in custody and set a new hearing for March 21. Kavala was arrested on October 18, 2017, according to Reuters, accused of his role in the 2013 nationwide protests against the government of then-Prime Minister (and current President) Tayyip Tayyip Erdogan, as well as a case related to the failed coup attempt in July 2016.
Osman Kavala himself denies having committed any crime.
