Turkey: A soldier killed in northern Iraq

A Turkish soldier was killed today during a military operation in northern Iraq, where Ankara is fighting Turkish Kurdish rebels, the Turkish Defense Ministry said.

The death toll rises to six for Turkish soldiers killed in the area the day before yesterday, Tuesday.

According to the official Turkish news agency Anadolu, the soldier was killed by fighters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is considered a terrorist organization by Ankara and its Western allies.

The PKK, which has bases and training camps in the region of autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan, has been waging an armed uprising against the Turkish state since 1984. The conflict has killed at least 40,000 people, including many civilians.

Ankara has launched several operations in Turkey, Iraq and Syria against Kurdish rebels belonging to or linked to the PKK. The most recent began in April in northern Iraq.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Monday the imminent launch of a new Turkish military operation in northern Syria aimed at securing a 30km “security zone” in Ankara.
