Turkey: Announced the start of an air operation in northern Iraq and Syria

The start of the “Forked Sword” air operation in northern Iraq and Syria, areas that it considers to have been “used as bases by Kurdish terrorists”, announced the Ministry of Defense of Turkey.

“The planes have taken off from their bases, the air operation has begun,” the ministry said in a statement, one week after the bloody attack in Istanbul.

The operation is being conducted “on the basis of the legitimate rights of defense as provided for in Article 51 of the UN Charter, in order to neutralize terrorist attacks from northern Iraq and Syria, ensure border security and eliminate terrorism at its img,” the statement added.

During the night, the Turkish Ministry of Defense posted on Twitter: “The time of reckoning has arrived! The bastards will be held accountable for their insidious attacks,” referring to the November 13 attack on Istiklal Avenue in the heart of Istanbul. It killed 6 people and injured 81 others.

“Terrorists’ nests are leveled with precision strikes,” the ministry added in a second post, without specifying the targets hit.

Turkish authorities blamed the attack on the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the People’s Protection Units (YPG), a Kurdish paramilitary group operating in Syria that Ankara says is linked to the PKK.
