Turkish authorities have arrested a man considered to be suspected of “high interest” in the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise in July, Haiti’s Foreign Minister Claude Joseph said late Monday.
Former businessman Moise, 53, who took office in 2017, was shot dead in his private home and his wife was injured in the attack. A group of Colombian mercenaries emerged as the main suspect, although no one was charged or convicted in connection with the case.
“I just had a phone conversation with the Turkish minister, my friend Mevlut Cavusoglu, to thank Turkey for the arrest of Samir Handal, one of the people of great interest in the investigation into the president’s assassination,” Joseph said on social media.
Turkish media reported that Handal, who was being wanted with an Interpol Red Warning, was detained at Istanbul airport by authorities while on a transit flight from the United States to Jordan.
