The Belarusian airline Belavia had announced earlier today that the Turkish authorities bans citizens from Syria, Iraq and Yemen from boarding flights from Turkey destined for Belarus.
Thousands of migrants stranded on Belarus-Poland border
The announcement comes as several thousand migrants, mostly from the Middle East, are stranded under difficult conditions on the border between Belarus and Poland, which prevents them from crossing its territory.
More than 2,000 people, mostly Kurds, have been trapped for days in a makeshift camp on the Belarusian side of the border.
According to the Polish newspaper “Gazeta Wyborcza”, ten migrants have lost their lives in recent weeks in the border area.
The European Union accuses Minsk of organizing these migratory movements, by issuing visas and chartering flights, to avenge Western sanctions imposed last year on Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko’s brutal crackdown on dissent.
