“Blockade” on Syrians, Yemenis and Iraqis wishing to travel to Minsk Turkey. As announced on Friday (12/11) by the General Directorate of Civil Aviation of Turkey (SHGM), these people are no longer allowed to buy airline tickets.
The European Union (EU) says Belarus is encouraging thousands of people fleeing war-torn parts of the world to try to cross its border and could impose new sanctions on Minsk and airlines carrying migrants on Monday.
Turkey and its airline, Turkish Airlines, are accused of contributing to the flow of migrants, accusation rejected by Ankara.
“Regarding the problem of illegal border crossing between the European Union and Belarus, it was decided that tickets will not be sold to citizens from Iraq, Syria and Yemen, who want to travel to Belarus from our country’s airports, and they will not be allowed to board planes “, noted SHGM through its Twitter account, as broadcast by the Athens News Agency.
The Belarusian airline Belavia had announced earlier today that the Turkish authorities bans citizens from Syria, Iraq and Yemen from boarding flights from Turkey destined for Belarus.
Thousands of migrants stranded on Belarus-Poland border
The announcement comes as several thousand migrants, mostly from the Middle East, are stranded under difficult conditions on the border between Belarus and Poland, which prevents them from crossing its territory.
More than 2,000 people, mostly Kurds, have been trapped for days in a makeshift camp on the Belarusian side of the border.
According to the Polish newspaper “Gazeta Wyborcza”, ten migrants have lost their lives in recent weeks in the border area.
The European Union accuses Minsk of organizing these migratory movements, by issuing visas and chartering flights, to avenge Western sanctions imposed last year on Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko’s brutal crackdown on dissent.
Brussels, which denounces “human trafficking”, is trying to curb the arrival of refugees and migrants in Belarus in contact with countries, mainly in the Middle East, to persuade them to prevent people from boarding flights to Minsk.
The EU also announced that new sanctions would be imposed on the Lukashenko regime next week.
