By decision of the Directorate of Information Technologies of the Turkish government, access from Turkey to the popular social media Instagram has been suspended from today, August 2. Officially no explanation was given. However, some media outlets and many users on the other social networking platform X are reporting that Instagram does not allow posts about the assassination of Hamas Politburo chief Ismail Haniya. In a post yesterday, Wednesday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s spokesman, Fahrettin Altun, blamed Instagram for “cutting” her posts about the Haniya assassination.
