Turkish authorities have announced that they will not allow two British minesweepers to pass through Turkish territorial waters as they head to Black Sea to be used by Ukraine.
According to Ankara, this would be recommended violation of an international treaty regarding the passage of the straits in war time.
Britain announced last month that it would transfer two Royal Navy minesweepers to the Ukrainian Navy to help bolster Ukraine's maritime operations in its war with Russia.
Turkey, a member of NATOhas informed its allies that it will not allow these ships to cross the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits while the war in Ukraine continues, the presidential communications department announced.
When Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Turkey activated the 1936 Treaty of Montreux, effectively blocking the passage of warships of the warring parties. The treaty excludes ships returning to their home base.
“Turkey applies the Montreux Treaty impartially and scrupulously to prevent an escalation in the Black Sea,” as the Turkish presidency claimed. Ankara maintains good relations with both Kiev and Moscow amid the war.
