Turkish justice has ordered the arrest of one of the co-founders of the opposition DEVA party, Metin Gurcan, who was released yesterday, Thursday, after six months in detention, local media reported.
Gurcan, one of the leaders of the Democracy and Progress Party (DEVA), was arrested in November and remanded in custody for “political and military espionage”.
Among the charges against him is that he shared classified information during his meetings with foreign diplomats.
He was released yesterday under judicial supervision and was released from Ankara prison as soon as the court decision was announced, overnight. Lawyers and his family were waiting for him there, according to the Turkish news agency Anadolu.
According to the Hürriyet newspaper, the prosecutor opposed his release and an Ankara court ordered his arrest again.
Gurcan was arrested and returned straight to prison.
Last year, the DEVA party leader criticized the rapprochement between Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, arguing that Ankara would be forced to make concessions in exchange for Emirati investments.
In a similar case, businessman and philanthropist Osman Kavala, who was sentenced last month to life in prison, was initially released, arrested and then released in October 2017 and jailed again the same day, before he could even go home. .
