Turkey: donates Bairaktar drone to Lithuania to be given to Ukraine

The manufacturer of drones “Bayraktar” announced that it will donate an unmanned aircraft to Lithuaniato be available at Ukraine to counter the Russian invasion.

According to Reuters, the private company Baykar, led by the son-in-law of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Selcuk Bayraktar and his brother, Haluk Bayraktar, made the decision, as Lithuanians raised more than 5m euros last week in a public effort to buy a military drone for Ukraine to support the country as it defends itself against the Russian invasion.

The money needed to purchase the Bayraktar TB2 gathered in three and a half days in this small Baltic country of 2.8 million inhabitants, which was for years under Soviet occupation.

“The people of Lithuania have raised a decent amount of money to buy a Bayraktar for Ukraine. “As soon as it was informed, Baykar decided to offer a free Bayraktar TB2 to Lithuania and requested that the money raised be sent to Ukraine as part of humanitarian aid,” Baykar said on Twitter.

Deal for drones in Lithuania

It is noted that this decision of the Turkish company in favor of Lithuania, a NATO member state such as Turkey, could not be implemented without the approval of the head of state. In fact, the donation comes amid Ankara’s opposition to Sweden and Finland joining NATO.
