The death toll from the earthquake that struck western Turkey on Friday reached 100 on Tuesday, the Turkish government disaster relief authority (Afad) said. The magnitude 7 earthquake on the Richter scale also injured 994 people, 147 of whom are still in hospital, Afad added.
Rescuers, according to the agency, are continuing their efforts to search for possible victims, particularly in the rubble of five buildings in Izmir province. The worst-hit town in the province is Bayrakli, where a 3-year-old Elif Perincek and 14-year-old Idil Sirin were rescued from the rubble of a building on Monday.

Dozens of buildings were destroyed by the earthquake, which left more than 5,000 homeless, housed in tents set up in makeshift camps in Izmir province. Some 1,464 aftershocks were recorded in the area, including 44 with a magnitude greater than 4, Turkish authorities said.
