Turkey will not allow the creation of a “terrorist” state on its southern border and it is its main priority to eliminate once and for all the threat of “terrorism” wherever it comes from, it is stated, among other things, in the announcement issued after the emergency government security council convened by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in his office at Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul.
Late last night it was announced the death of nine Turkish soldiers in clashes between the army and members of the Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK), illegal in Turkey, in northern Iraq and the wounding of two others.
In the statement, Turkey accuses the PKK of operating “as a contractor” on behalf of foreign forces. “Recent acts of terrorism against our troops operating outside our borders are an insidious part of the scenarios for the revival of the organization,” the statement said, adding:
“Within our right to self-defense and bilateral agreements, our top priority is to definitively eliminate wherever there is a terrorist threat, camp, shelter, formation, regardless of who is behind it. The vile separatists subcontracting Turkey's enemies will pay for every drop of blood they shed. We are determined to displease both those who act as minions in the traps set to prevent the goal of the “Century of Turkey” and those who hold their strings.
The announcement also states that the operations of the Turkish army in the area continue and that 45 rebels were killed in them, of which 36 were in northern Iraq and 9 in northern Syria.
The meeting was attended by Ministers of Defense Yasar Güler, Interior Ali Gerlikaya, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Chief of General Staff Metin Gürak, Chief of Intelligence Service “MIT” Ibrahim Kalin, and President Erdoğan's Diplomatic Adviser Akif Çagatay Kilic. .
Clashes between the Turkish army and the PKK in northern Iraq have intensified recently. On December 22 and 23, the Turkish Ministry of Defense announced the death of 12 soldiers and 20 members of the PKK, while daily the Turkish authorities announce targeted attacks by the army and the MIT secret service against Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq and northern Syria.
