Turkey: Erdogan called for ‘mutual understanding’ with Israel

LAST UPDATE: 19:04

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a telephone conversation with his Israeli counterpart Isaac Herzog today, the Turkish presidency said, referring to a relatively rare contact between the two countries, whose relations are strained.

The phone call between the two leaders came hours after the release and return to Israel of a couple of Israeli tourists accused of espionage and held for a week in Turkey.

“If we act with mutual understanding on bilateral and regional issues, disagreements can be reduced to a minimum,” Tayyip Erdogan told his Israeli counterpart, according to a statement from the Turkish presidency. The Turkish president also stressed the importance of relations between the two countries for the “stability and security” of the Middle East.

Mordy and Natalie O’Connor were arrested last week after visiting the tallest tower in Istanbul. They were accused of photographing Erdogan’s residence and were charged with “political and military espionage”.

Following their release, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett thanked “the Turkish president and his government for their cooperation” in a statement issued this morning.

The Israeli prime minister also had a telephone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan this afternoon, on the occasion of the release and return to Israel of a couple of Israeli tourists accused of espionage and detained for a week in Turkey.

Bennett thanked Erdogan for his help in securing the couple’s release, the Israeli prime minister’s office said in a statement.

It was the first conversation between an Israeli prime minister and a Turkish president since 2013, according to Bennett’s office.

Relations between Turkey and Israel have been strained since 2010 and the attack by Israeli forces on the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

Tayyip Erdogan appears during his 18-year rule as a defender of the Palestinian cause and systematically accuses Israel of “terrorism” against the Palestinians.
