Turkey: First case of smallpox in a 37-year-old man

The first case of smallpox in monkeys was recorded by Turkeyto a 37-year-old who has been isolated, as announced today by the Minister of Health Fahrettin Kotsa.

The virus has been detected in more than 50 countries, except African countries, where it is endemic. The World Health Organization (WHO) says the number of cases is rising in these countries and is calling for intensified diagnostic tests.

“THE smallpox of monkeys was found in one of our patients. “The patient is 37 years old and has an immune deficiency,” Kotsa wrote on Twitter. The minister also said that the patient is in isolation, his contacts have been tracked and no other case has been found.

In total they have been recorded over 3,400 cases of smallpox in monkeys and one death since the onset of the first cases in May, mainly in Europe. The cases concern men who have sex with other men, according to a WHO report.

More than 1,500 cases and 66 deaths have also been reported in countries where the disease is most prevalent. Last week, the WHO ruled that the outbreak was not yet a “global emergency” for public health, ie the highest level of alert.
