Special envoys from Turkey and Armenia will take part in the first round of talks aimed at normalizing relations between the two countries, which will take place in Moscow on January 14th, according to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, as Ankara and Yerevan make efforts to restoring their bonds after years of hostility.
“The first meeting between the Turkish and Armenian special envoys will take place in Moscow on January 14,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement, without elaborating.
Armenia and Turkey signed a “landmark” peace agreement in 2009 to re-establish ties and open their borders decades later, but the agreement was never ratified and relations remained strained. During the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict last year, Ankara backed Azerbaijan and accused Yerevan of occupying Azerbaijani territory.
Turkey and Armenia appointed special envoys late last year.
