Turkey: Flames besiege beach resorts for fifth day – 8 dead

Eight of the dead are from forest fires off the south coast of Turkey, while firefighters are battling for a fifth day to bring the blaze under control near seaside resorts.

Two other people died today in the town of Manavgat, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca announced, while ten were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

More than 100 fires that have broken out in Turkey in the last five days have been brought under control, according to authorities. However, fires are still raging in Manavgat, Marmaris and the town of Milas, according to Agriculture and Forestry Minister Bekir Pakdemirli.

In Bodrum (Bodrum), a group of tourists and a hotel staff were evacuated by boat as flames spread and dense smoke covered the sky. Pakdemirli said the fire in the area had been brought under control this morning.

In the previous days, the fires killed five people in Manavgat and another in Marmaris. Efforts are being made to put out six still raging fires, according to the Ministry of Forests.

As of Wednesday, thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes. Russia, Ukraine, Iran and Azerbaijan have sent aid to support local firefighters. The Turkish government has promised to rebuild the damaged houses and compensate the residents.

Pakdemirli said at least 13 planes, 45 helicopters, drones and 828 fire engines were involved in the firefight.
