Turkish authorities have arrested a US diplomat working at the US Consulate in Lebanon for allegedly providing a fake passport to a Syrian national, Turkey’s state-run news agency reported on Wednesday.
The Anadolu agency said the suspect, identified by DJK initials, was detained at Istanbul airport on November 11 and later formally arrested on suspicion of selling a fake passport to a Syrian national for $ 10,000.
Anadolu said that Syros was arrested for questioning after he tried to travel to Germany with a fake passport, which was in the name of DJK.
Later, the police found out through the examination of footage from security cameras, that DJK gave him the passport at the airport and the two of them also exchanged clothes. Police also seized a file containing $ 10,000 from the diplomat, the report said.
The American was imprisoned while Syros was released pending possible proceedings for forgery of documents, Anadolu reports.
The US Embassy in Ankara did not comment on the report. There was also no immediate comment from the US Embassy in Beirut.
