Turkey has pulled out of hosting a UN environment summit because of February’s deadly earthquakes

THE Turkey withdrew from hosting COP16, the major international summit on biodiversity, which was due to be held in 2024; due to the devastating earthquakes that hit the country, announced UN.

Ankara decided to resign “from hosting and the presidency” of this important session, due to the state of emergency caused by the February earthquakes, the secretariat of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CDB) said in a letter to the contracting countries, dated 31 July.

The CDB called on countries wishing to host the meeting on the same dates (October 21-November 1, 2024) or on other nearby dates to do so “as soon as possible”.

Canada’s environment ministry said some countries such as the United Kingdom could replace Turkey. France cannot be a candidate because their schedule is burdened by time, due to the Olympics and the United Nations Ocean Summit, to be held in June 2025, the Ministry of Ecological Transition said.

Biodiversity COPs are held every two years, unlike climate COPs, which are held annually. The previous one, originally scheduled to be hosted in China in 2020, was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and finally took place in December 2022 in Montreal. That summit resulted in a historic agreement, as countries agreed on a roadmap to protect 30% of the planet by 2030.
