Turkey: He refuses to leave the wreckage where his family was buried – ‘I will wait here all my life’

A man in Turkey he refuses to leave the rubble of what was once the building his family lived in, as all but him were buried in the rubble created by the fomisks earthquakes.

As reported by the Reuters agency, Mr Kazaz, a 25-year-old Syrian who arrived in Turkey with his family five years ago, was sitting on a chair next to a tent in which he has been sleeping for the past 15 days.

I will wait here all my life. I will not leaveKazaz said, holding his head in his hands, crying. “I knew at least 250 people on this street. Now they are all dead“, he said, referring to a main road in Antakia where his family lived.

Kazaz lived in Turkey’s northeastern province of Trabzon, where he worked as a translator in the tourism industry. He spent the day before the first earthquake in Antakya, visiting his family for the first time in years.

“I worked for three years in Trebizond, saving money to get married. My mother turned it all into gold and it all stayed at home. (Now) I’m starting from scratch.”

When the initial earthquake became known, he hurried back to Antakya. He said he pulled his sister and mother from the rubble by himself, without help from authorities.

A video of what he said was his own rescue attempt showed him climbing through a narrow opening between a collapsing ceiling and the floor until only his feet were visible.

His mother was already dead when he took her out and his sister died shortly after, he said. In another video, he showed his sister’s body, which is seen covered in a pink blanket.

“I lived for them. It’s like I’m a newborn. I have nobody. I do not have money. I have nothing. I have no future. I don’t have a house».
