Court in Turkey accepted the indictment, which seeks a prison sentence of more than 4 years Ekrem Imamoglou, for statements deemed offensive against high-ranking officials. The mayor of Istanbul is considered – and is – one of his great opponents Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
According to Turkish media today and the APE-MPE reports, the prosecutor asked for a prison sentence of 4 years and one month, because Imamoglou had described as “foolish” the decision of the members of the Supreme Electoral Council to annul the result of the municipal elections of March 31, 2019, in which it had prevailed.
With only 13,000 votes ahead of Erdogan’s ruling party candidate in the canceled election process, the mayor of Istanbul defeated his opponent by almost 800,000 votes in the new elections in June of that year.
Arguing that his statements against the Electoral Authority were merely “sharp criticism”, Imamoglou rejected the accusation of insult.
