Turkey, KDP Kurds to Attack Iraqi Kurdistan in Mid-April

The Turkish military is planning an operation in southern Iraqi Kurdistan in mid-April, the Kurdish news agency ANF reported, citing sources in the region.

The invasion of the Turkish Armed Forces will take place with the “active participation” of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in Iraq, the ruling party in the western provinces of Erbil and Dohuk in Iraqi Kurdistan, which is an ally of Turkey, ANF reported.

Turkey regularly launches airstrikes in northern Iraq, where the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has many bases, including its headquarters in the Qandil Mountains. An armed group that has been fighting for Kurdish autonomy in Turkey for almost four decades, the PKK is recognized as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

Turkey’s latest attack is set to take place in the Kanimasi area of Duhok on April 15, the ANF quoted a KDP-linked source as saying.

“There will be an explosion that will kill three senior soldiers. One of them will be an officer of the department responsible for the fight against the PKK, another will be in charge of the Zêrevanî unit,” one of the sources told the agency. clear reference to the militarized police force of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government.

According to ANF, a team from Zêrevanî and the Turkish-trained KDP Roj-Peshmerga mercenary unit are currently stationed at the Binesalaw base.

Turkey’s internal conflict with the PKK has resulted in 40,000 casualties for almost four decades. In recent years, fighting has shifted more and more to the border with Iraq.

Earlier this month, Turkish warplanes bombed a mountain in front of students at a local primary school in Barzan province of Erbil province.
