Turkey launched new airstrikes against Kurdish fighters in Iraq and Syria

Turkey says it destroyed 23 targets in night airstrikes against Kurdish fighters in northern Iraq and Syria, in a further escalation of the conflict south of its border. The attacks are the latest launched by Turkey after nine Turkish soldiers were killed in clashes with Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants in northern Iraq on Friday.

“The new raids hit targets in northern Syria and the areas of Medina, Gara, Hakurk and Qandil in northern Iraq,” according to a statement from the Ministry of Defense last night (from Monday).

Twenty-three targets were destroyed, including caves, hideouts, tunnels, ammunition depots, supply materials and facilities used by the terrorist organization.” said in a statement that was accompanied by a photo of Turkish fighter jets.

The defense ministry said many fighters were “neutralized,” using a widely used term to mean killed.

The PKK, considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, took up arms against the Turkish state in 1984. At least 40,000 people have been killed in the insurgency.

Interior Minister Ali Gerlikaya also reported on the social networking platform X how anti-terrorist police arrest 165 people in operations targeting PKK in 28 Turkish provinces.

The operations have targeted people alleged to be members of the group, to have aided it or to have spread what it calls PKK propaganda.
