Turkey now wants to ‘cut’ $23bn US F-16 deal

The Turkish government has decided to cut a $23 billion defense contract with the US to modernize NATO’s second-largest fleet of F-16 fighter jets and will seek an offset deal to produce some warplane components locally, the “Bloomberg” in its publication. Ankara is seeking from 2021 to buy 40 latest-generation Lockheed Martin F-16 jets, 79 kits to modernize its existing fleet, as well as hundreds of bombs and missiles. The US approved the sale earlier this year after Turkey ratified Sweden’s entry into the alliance. According to the report, Turkey is now pushing to buy fewer upgrade kits and ammunition to save billions amid spending cuts, according to sources familiar with the planning who spoke to Bloomberg. Turkey wants its growing military aviation industry to meet some of the needs for the F-16s, the agency reports.
