Turkey paralyzed by snow: Flights were canceled, schools were closed

Heavy snowfall has paralyzed her Turkey creating several problems in the daily life of the inhabitants.

Turkish Airlines was forced to cancel 180 flights today, 162 flights from Istanbul Airport and 18 from Sabiha Gokcen Airport. Turkish airline Pegasus said on its website that about 30 domestic flights would be canceled today.

A spokesman for IGA, the management company of Istanbul’s busiest airport in Europe in 2021, said it remained open today, with an estimated 770 flights expected, compared to an average of almost 1,000 daily.

At the end of January the international airport of Istanbul was forced to suspend its operation for two days due to snowfall, according to the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency, citing AFP.

Closed schools and universities

Buses, lorries and heavy vehicles are not allowed in Istanbul, most of which are covered by snow, announced the local authorities. The city governor also asked drivers to avoid unnecessary travel.

Schools, daycare centers, kindergartens and universities, which were closed yesterday, Thursday, will be closed until Monday, while shopping malls will be open from 12:00 until 19:00 today.
