Turkey plans to impose visas on Schengen countries that reject Turkish citizens’ visa applications

Turkey is reportedly planning to take reciprocal measures against citizens of Schengen-affiliated countries if they continue to deny Turkish nationals a Schengen visa.

Local media reported that Turkish authorities have threatened to impose a visa requirement for citizens of Schengen countries if the current situation does not improve, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Turkish nationals have been facing problems for months when planning to travel to the European Union due to the high rejection rate.

Several Turkish nationals have expressed their concerns on Twitter about the matter.

The head of the European Union in Turkey, Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, has only recently commented on the increase in the cancellation of visas for Turkish nationals by the embassies and consulates of the Schengen zone in the country.

In an interview with Deutsche Welle’s Turkish service, Meyer-Landrut said the increase in visa rejections and the delay in processing visas is just “slightly above the global average”. Furthermore, he argued that rejections and delays are not political or exclusive to Turkish citizens.

Meyer-Landrut said that in order to avoid having their application rejected, Turkish nationals should make sure to submit their applications on time and, at the same time, pointed out that most of the applications were rejected because they were incomplete and potentially fraudulent.

Schengen visa statistics show that a total of 271,977 applications were submitted to Schengen embassies by Turkish nationals and 16.5% of them were rejected. This is a significant increase compared to 2019, when the rejection rate was only 9.6%.

In addition, the data shows that France and Germany have the highest rejection rate for Turkish nationals.

Commenting on the data, SchengenVisaInfo.com editor-in-chief Shkurta Januzi told Reuters earlier this week that rejection rates for Schengen visa applications have increased worldwide. However, he pointed out that compared to other countries, such as Russia, Turkey’s rejection rate increase is much higher and more consistent.
