Turkey will mass-produce the domestically built Hürjet, a training and light fighter jet, according to Hurriyet.
The Defense Industry Executive Committee made the announcement following a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan later in the week.
Turkey has scheduled the first Hürjet flight for 2023, the country’s centenary. Ankara hopes to use the Hürjet as a training aircraft for fifth-generation aircraft, Hurriyet reported.
It will have an advanced mission computer and radar. Hurriyet also said that “air and ground communications capabilities will reduce threats and risks”.
The Hürjet will be 13.4 meters long and have a wingspan of 11 meters and “will aim to provide environmental safety to aggressive operations”.
Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), the construction company of Hürjet, planned to start production of the aircraft by the end of 2021.
Last April, TAI Aircraft Training Program Director Tuncay Çopur claimed that the Hürjet could possibly be used in the Turkish Navy’s upcoming flagship, the TCG Anadolu amphibious assault ship.
“It will also have the infrastructure to land and take off from the upcoming Naval Command (DzKK) light aircraft and our discussions with the navy on this are continuing,” Çopur told pro-government Turkish media at the time.
