Turkey: Series of earthquakes in Malatya province terrifies residents

Young earthquakethe fourth in three days and the third today, hit the southeastern province of Malatya Turkeywith no casualties, but causing concern among the population after February’s deadly earthquake that left 50,000 dead.

Malatya province was rocked today by three earthquakes of magnitude 4.8, 4.5 and 4.2, following Thursday’s 5.3-magnitude earthquake in the same area.

“There is no negative development. Not even a building collapse fortunately,” provincial governor Hulusi Sahin said, according to Anadolu news agency.

“After February’s deadly earthquake, “half the population has left the area, most buildings have been damaged. Those who remain are housed in containers, fortunately,” Mehmed Cinar, mayor of Gesiliurt, where the epicenter of today’s earthquakes was located, told NTV television.

Terrified by successive tremors, residents prefer to stay outdoors in parks, according to local media.

February’s 7.8-magnitude earthquake in the same region destroyed or damaged 200,000 buildings in 11 provinces and neighboring northern Syria.
