Turkey: Shock prices on basic items – Up to 614% on lemons and potatoes

High production and transport costs combined with the long winter in Turkey this year have driven up the prices of 4 key agricultural products: potatoes, onions, tomatoes and lemons “seeing” increases at the counter ranging from 100% to 614% compared with 2021.

According to Cumhuriyet, potatoes from 70 kouros/kg sold on average last year are priced at 5 pounds this year and onions from 60 kouros/kg in 2021 are also priced at 5 pounds. At the market stalls, potatoes are sold at 12.95 pounds per kilo and onions at 9.75 pounds/kilo.

Estimates from market players indicate that producers will have difficulty growing potatoes and lemons again this year, with prices remaining high after the summer. Transport costs have increased by 1 to 1.5 pounds per kilo.

As the same report said, farmers are afraid of not getting their money back. “Lemon, onion and potato are basic food items. Their price increase is shaking everyone,” said the president of the Federation of Agricultural Producers Yuksel TavÅŸan.

He noted that farmers are turning to tomatoes, but he does not expect a big drop in prices. Typical is the problem with lemons, which, he says, have skyrocketed in price on the one hand because of the ice that destroyed many crops and on the other hand because of “increased costs that led many growers to cut down the trees and deal with other products.” In addition, there is a shift from greenhouse crops to field crops.

It is noted that inflation in Turkey has climbed to around 80%, the highest level in the last 24 years.
