Turkey: Six opposition party chairmen meet in search of ‘anti-Erdogan’ candidate

The leaders of Turkey’s six opposition parties met on Sunday for the sixth time, saying they are “more determined and optimistic” than in February, when they first held their meeting at the now famous round table.

After a six-hour meeting on August 21, opposition leaders issued a joint statement, saying the candidate they will put forward to face Recep Tayyip Erdogan “will be the president of all”.

The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Eudaimonia Party (Saadet Partisi) in the capital Ankara and was attended by the presidents from the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), Kemal Kilçdaroglu, from the Good Party (İYİ), Meral Aksener, from the Eudaimonia Party , Temel Karamolaoglu, from the Democratic Party, Gultekin Wisal, from the Future Party, Ahmet Davutoglu and from the Democracy and Progress Party (DEVA), Ali Babacan.

The presidents announced that they will hold their next meeting on October 2 at CHP headquarters.

“We have become the hope of our nation by our determination, when we gathered for the first time on February 12, 2022, to call a ‘stop’ to the natural results of the executive presidential system that is rapidly pushing our country into a disaster, e.g. . bankruptcy, disrepute in the domestic and international political scene, corruption in public institutions and officials and sociological and psychological collapse,” the statement said.

The leaders also promised to “end social polarization” and “ensure social peace” in the country.
