Syrian singer Omar Suleiman has been released was arrested Wednesday by police in southeastern Turkey on charges of “terrorist propaganda”.

The singer, who became internationally known for combining electronic music with traditional Syrian rhythms, fled to Turkey shortly after the outbreak of war in Syria, was accused of links to the PKK / YPG, according to Turkish media.
Ankara considers the People’s Protection Units (YPG), Syria’s largest Kurdish militia, to be part of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is considered terrorist organisation from Turkey, the European Union and the United States.
After being detained for 24 hours at the Sanliurfa police station, a town about 50km from the border with Syria, Omar Suleiman was taken to a hostel on Thursday to serve as a detention center for people to be deported from Turkish territory, the lawyer explained.
According to Reuters, citing a local security source, a court in the province of Sanliurfa decided to release Omar Almasich – as the singer’s real name is – after making a statement to the security forces.
