Turkey: The south was burned by fires and the north was flooded by rains

Floods caused by unusually heavy rainfall hit its northern coast Turkey today, as a result of which a bridge collapsed and villages were left without electricity, after the fires – one of the largest in the history of the country – that hit the southwestern regions.

The state-run TRT Haber network reported that a man had died of a heart attack in the northern province of Bartin and that rescue teams were searching for a missing person.

Thirteen people were injured after a bridge collapsed in Bartin and 12 villages were left without electricity, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD).

In the province of Sinop, 240 kilometers east of Bartin, a house collapsed due to the flood and cars were swept away by the water, according to images broadcast by Reuters.

AFAD said a hospital was being evacuated and some roads closed in Sinop, warning that heavy rains in the area were expected to continue.

The northern part of Turkey is often affected by floods during the summer when the rainfall is particularly heavy. Last year, at least five people were killed in floods that hit the area.

In the last two weeks, Turkey has also been confronted with forest fires that have burned vast areas of forest in the southern coastal areas.
