Turkey won’t support Sweden joining NATO if Stockholm doesn’t crack down on ‘terrorists’

THE Sweden cannot wait for Turkey to approve its membership in NATO ahead of the summit of the Atlantic alliance next month, the Turkish president said yesterday Wednesday (14/6) Recep Tayyip Erdoganaccording to whom Stockholm is not fully implementing its new anti-terror law to crack down on Kurdish separatist activity which Ankara labels “terrorists”.

The annual NATO summit will be held in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, on July 11 and 12.

Mr. Erdogan’s position was made a few hours before the scheduled talks of Swedish, Finnish and NATO officials with their Turkish counterparts in Ankara. The Swedish side will be told not to expect a change in the Turkish attitude ahead of the summit, the Turkish head of state said.

THE NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said yesterday Wednesday (14/6) in Brussels that in the contacts in Ankara “some progress was made”that the talks took place “in a constructive atmosphere” and that “we will continue to work” so that the ratification of Sweden’s accession takes place “as quickly as possible”.

“Of course, I’m not in a position to give you an exact timetable or guarantees,” added the Norwegian, judging that it remains possible for Turkey to change its position in time, i.e. before the summit of the alliance.
