Turkish Airlines denies smuggling illegal immigrants to Belarus

Turkish national carrier Turkish Airlines denies media reports claiming it was transporting illegal immigrants to Belarus.

“Some national and foreign media outlets claim that Turkish Airlines flights to Belarus have contributed to the smuggling of migrants. Our company takes into account all aspects of security and operates in cooperation with international flight authorities around the world. “These media reports are not true,” a spokesman for the airline told Russia’s TASS news agency on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, earlier it was reported that the European Union could impose sanctions on Turkish Airlines for air transport of migrants to Belarus.

On Monday, several thousand migrants approached the Polish border from the Belarusian side. Some of them tried to dismantle the wire fence. Polish police used tear gas. After a failed attempt to cross the border, migrants set up camp.

According to the Polish border guard, between 2,000 and 4,000 people are currently living on the border with Poland, seeking to enter European Union territory. From time to time they make attempts to invade the border. About 20,000 soldiers, border guards and police are stationed along the border to ensure security.
