Turkish army bombs Kurdish positions in northern Iraq

Fighter jets, helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of the Turkish Armed Forces hit camps, underground galleries, hideouts and ammunition depots of separatist Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq, the Iraqi government has said Anadolu news.

According to Mr. Akar, units of the Turkish special forces, which “entered” Iraq, are also involved in the operation. The targets are located in the Metina, Zap and Avassin-Basyan areas of northern Iraq, according to the defense minister of Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government.

“So far, our business is continuing successfully as planned,” he said, without referring to business losses.

According to Hulusi Akar, the purpose of the Turkish military operation in Iraq is to prevent “terrorist acts” and to guarantee “border security”. Artillery units are also involved in the operation, he clarified.

The large-scale Turkish offensive is part of an ongoing multi-year campaign in Iraq and Syria against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the People’s Protection Units (YPG), respectively, which Ankara describes as “terrorist” organizations.

The PKK took up arms against the Turkish state in 1984. More than 40,000 people, mostly minorities, have been killed since the war, mainly in southeastern Turkey.

Turkish officials have said in private that despite repeated public protests, the government in Baghdad has sided with Ankara in its fight against the PKK, an organization also described as “terrorist” by the United States and the European Union.
