Turkey’s Karadeniz Holding said on Saturday (11) that it would send two humanitarian aid ships, each with a capacity of 1,500 people, to assist in relief efforts in Hatay province, in the south of the country.
The area was hit by a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake that killed more than 24,000 people on Monday.
“The company is working with the authorities to deploy the lifeboats Suheyla Sultan and Rauf Bey to Iskenderun-Hatay,” they said, adding that this would be their first humanitarian mission.
The so-called lifeboats, built for humanitarian relief missions, have accommodation, refrigerators, TVs and heating, as well as facilities for education, health and food, the company said.
“We focus all our energy on this project to serve people in the earthquake affected area. Our aim is to provide a safe haven for them as soon as possible,” it said in a statement.
The earthquake left hundreds of thousands of people homeless across 10 provinces in Turkey’s southeastern region, with many sleeping in tents and cars amid freezing temperatures.
Karadeniz Holding is known for its 36 floating power plants that produce electricity around the world.
