A Turkish Court arrested the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, on Sunday (23), while awaiting trial, the state media and other broadcasters have said, to a measure that will probably trigger the country’s largest protests in over a decade.
The decision to send imamoglu – who is President Tayyip’s main political rival Erdogan – for arrest occurs after the main opposition party, European leaders and tens of thousands of protesters criticized actions against him as politicized.
The court said that imamoglu and at least 20 were arrested as part of an investigation of corruption. A separate decision on a terrorism -related investigation has not yet been issued.
