One of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in Turkey, BtcTurk, has joined the Crypto Patent Alliance (COPA).
The exchange intends, together with other companies, to provide free access to patents related to cryptocurrency technologies. COPA is seeking to abolish patents as they are seen as an obstacle to innovation in the industry.
The Alliance advocates for a freer approach to intellectual property. The organization includes companies such as Coinbase, Block, Aquarius, Microstrategy and Meta. The members of the alliance have pledged not to register patents for crypto-currency technologies and blockchain, so that they remain available to the general public.
The Turkish exchange will support COPA in countering “patent trolls”, that is, those who maliciously use trademark patent laws, using legislative protection as leverage.
“We believe that patent trolls must be countered in order to protect the fundamentals of the industry and crypto asset technology developers,” explained BtcTurk General Counsel Ayça Aktolga Öztürk.
According to BtcTurk CEO Özgür Güneri, the exchange has joined COPA in order to improve the global crypto ecosystem. The company donated $210,000 to develop the project. According to Güneri, the crypto exchange will also be involved in other aspects of the organization’s work, such as, for example, lawsuits.
In April, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase announced that it was finalizing talks with BtcTurk to take over the company for $3.2 billion.
