The war in Ukraine, the pandemic, but especially the interest rate policy of President Tayyip Erdogan have hit the Turkish economy hard with official inflation exceeding 73% and the informal one at least double. As a result of the economic crisis, which shows no signs of easing in the immediate future, many, especially scientists, are returning or intending to turn their backs on their homeland. A significant number of them are doctors. According to the Turkish Medical Association, by the end of May, 938 doctors had left Turkey, while last year their number exceeded 1,400.
Utku Ozbai has been working as a dentist in her homeland for 20 years. However, he plans to leave Turkey in search of a better fortune abroad. The dentist states that due to the soaring inflation, he is paid, in fact, less and less at the dental clinic where he works. She even says that many of her patients do not come to appointments because they are no longer able to pay her.
Utku Ozbai appears determined to leave her homeland. Even if it means a change of profession: “If necessary I will work as a dentist only to pay my bills. I am an unmarried mother with a 9-year-old son. I can no longer afford the expenses for his school. It is becoming more and more difficult to cope with my financial obligations “.
The economic crisis is hurting the AKP
Increasingly, Turkish doctors are taking part in mobilizations for poor working conditions and low earnings, which are constantly being eroded by inflation. Many workers leave Turkey for Europe and especially Germany, where there is a large Turkish community.
Referring to the political implications of the economic crisis, economist Weisel Ulusoy said: “Inflation is having a significant impact on politics. The economic crisis is greatly reducing the number of voters in the ruling AKP of Tayyip Erdogan.”
The Turkish dentist, however, appears convinced that despite any difficulties abroad, she will definitely have better luck there than in Turkey: “I will have the life I deserve. And my son will go to a good school enjoying a good education in Europe”.
